Girls participation in PG: Growing!
We had our latest all-girls clinic on Oct. 17, and it was great.
What was most encouraging about our Pleasant Grove Soccer & Sports Girls Community Soccer Night: We had 60 young female players from Pleasant Grove, which was about 20 more than last year’s all-girls clinic.
A fun warm-up activity that the girls (or boys!) always enjoy: it’s about teaching athletic position and moving in response to auditory cues — but all in a way the young players enjoy.
We had two special guest coaches who helped make this a big success: former Mexico international Alina Garciamendez and former Panama international Candace Johnson. Big thanks also to Ranchview High School girls soccer coach Katie Makanani for adding to the quality stafff.
Plus, we had this one under the lights, on a Friday night, making it feel more like a big “event.'“
For this one, we try to get as many female coaches as possible; we want to show girls from Pleasant Grove that women can play and enjoy the beautiful game, but also that they can participate in other ways. There’s room for female coaches, community soccer leaders, referees and people who specialize in the business of soccer.
Also, we’ve learned (and have written about it here before) that girls can sometimes be intimidated about joining our camps and clinics with so many boys around.
Big thanks also to WW Samuell High School for hosting!
Let’s do it again in the spring — and make it even bigger!
The girls enjoyed taking pics with our guest coaches — including two former international, Candace Johnson (far left) and Alina Garciamendez. Ranchview HS girls soccer coach Katie Makanani is on the right.
